June 2 and 3

Wednesday night there were several WalMart trucks pulled into the filling station at our campground. Gary talked to one of the drivers and he said all they haul is produce and meat to Anchorage and Fairbanks. The rest comes in by ship.  How would you like to have their route??

June 2 - Got to Whitehorse (mile 918) which has been the capital of the Yukon since 1953.  There is a sizeable airport here and Germans are so in love with the Yukon that there are two weekly flights that come here direct from Frankfurt.  Amazing!  I think there is also one from Switzerland.

There is only one brewery in the Yukon and we went on a tour of their facility.  They have won many awards for their beers.  It is a very small facility and most everything is done by manual labor.  Gary thought the beer was good.  It was a little "hoppy" for me.  They don't export much out of the Yukon.
Whitehorse has a population of about 24,000 and seemed to be popular with cruise buses.  We camped at the Hi Country RV Park.  We decided we should pick up whatever grocery items we might need. It was noticible that certain sections in the store were a little low on some products.

We left Whitehorse this morning and the scenery turned even more beautiful.

The Kluane National Icefield Ranges are Canada's highest and world's largest nonpolar alpine ice field.  Kluane Lake is the largest lake in Yukon Territory covering approximagtely 154 square miles.

We decided to make this a really short day so when we arrived at the Cottonwood RV Park we parked for the day.  I'm writing this blog and Gary is playing with his ham radio.  This is really a beautiful spot and the people are very nice.  The lady said there were grizzlies in the area.  They saw one here about a week ago. Wish we'd see one - from a distance.

The Kluane Lake is about 75 feet off our back bumper.

We are about 200 miles from the Yukon - Alaska border.  It would be nice to think that we can go that far but when we filled up a few miles back the guy at the filling station said that from here on the road gets very bad.  We'll probably be driving 25 mph so don't know how far we'll get.  Up to now the roads have been great except for a few short areas under construction.

So, until the next wifi, see you later!
